Why not call for independence referendum?

I see Plaid Cymru are calling for a referendum on 'Scottish style powers' for the Welsh Parliament after the next elections. Yet recent polls in Wales have shown a majority for full independence just like Scotland.

Why not therefore aim to have a referendum on Welsh independence in 2007?

It seems pretty obvious that Plaid have decided to go for an explicitly gradualist approach.

Recent PPB's don't mention independence and as you point out they are not even calling for a direct referendum on independence.

It remains to be seen whether this approach will work, I'm certainly glad the SNP haven't went down this route however.

As you point out support for independence in Wales is rising and seems to be at a similar level to the SNP, maybe the Welsh people are ready for more than PC actually realise.
